Living a Better Story
The rules or principles in storytelling are also the rules for living a meaningful life.
Our life is a story that is being written, and we are the main character. Every one of us has a story.
The elements in a great story include:
A Dream or Passion: The main character- that will be us- desires something. We must have a dream that is worthy of our God-given design. This includes finding work that is a calling instead of just a job; work that is engaging, meaningful and meets needs that matter to us.
Conflict: Getting the "something" we desire will require going through conflict. A dream or calling worth pursuing will take us out of our comfort zone. There will be times when we don't know if we can do it on our own, which is exactly how God intends it to be. He wants us to depend on His power, and not our own. God uses struggles to grow and develop us into the person He created us to be.
Sacrifice: In a great story, it takes sacrifice for the character to pursue his/her mission in life. Jesus modeled this by coming to earth to serve rather than to be served. He gave his life on the cross so that we could tell great stories with our lives. Our greatest joy in life comes as we use our gifts and abilities to serve a world in need.
